Forget the X-Factor making a mockery of the Christmas Number 1 for years, forget Simon Cowell and his money making schemes. Let’s talk about how a small idea changed history. And no, that’s not an exaggeration.
In years to come when we glance back over the Christmas Number 1 singles, we’ll always see Rage Against The Machine in there at number 1, 2009. Hardly the usual Christmas tripe, RATMs awesome rock song ‘Killing in the Name of’ isn’t even a new song! And yet because Jon and Tracy Morter from Essex were sick of petulant pop songs ruling the roost, RATM are suddenly the numero uno. All the Morter’s did was create a facebook group and the whole thing snowballed. Social networking chat urged people to join the group and in the end, 1.5 million people backed the campaign. People saw the group, bought the single and here we are!
Now there’s talk of using facebook to do the same thing for the World Cup and the Three Lions song. Let’s bring all the classics back and we’ll never have to listen to pop again! Just goes to show exactly what social networking can do.
