This week saw around 25 million mobile handsets in India fade for good after laws requiring mobiles without an IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) to be disconnected from service were passed. One of the main reasons for the new laws is the Mumbai terror attacks of 2008 when the terrorists used black market mobiles to keep in contact with each other. Mobiles with an IMEI number can be tracked and authorities can also stop stolen phones with an IMEI from being used with another SIM card. It looks like a lot of people will be putting mobile phones on their wish list this year!
